Naturally, we are not totally against Proportional Representation (PR), but sometimes an eye-catching headline is useful. PR does however have problems that its advocates always seem to gloss over. To give Scotland as an example, when we were European Union members the citizens of Scotland had four elections to vote in. European Union MEPs, local Council elections, Scottish Parliament elections and General elections for MPs. The General elections, as in the rest of the UK, are first past the post. The other three were all by PR. However, all three used a different version of PR.
This makes for a very complete democratic system for their citizens to negotiate.
The political organisations and members of the public that are calling for us to adopted PR never say which PR system they want us to have and they are all quite different.
We propose a devolution of power to regional governments, not unlike the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms that used to exist before the Norman invasion of 1066 and the other Viking conquests previous to then. The seven kingdoms were Northumbria, Mercia, East Anglia, Essex, Kent, Sussex, and Wessex.
